our investiture squadron is quite messed up now, i need you all to come for at least 4 practices before investiture to get ready Pocahontas, it's not even halfway done!!! that includes everyone, like EVERYONE, and not just the exco & SLs. if bryan and chengxun takes the effort to come down (no offence)i dont see why the rest cant come down/make it. remember, this is OUR year, this is our LAST performance together as this great and unique batch, next year at rj i dont really think everyone would join band. pls make the effort to come down, we need a complete and rich band sound before anything else.

Hey, these are some stuff that you might want to say to juniors who are not happy because of SYF or have questions about the process...

1. I didn't pon anything, I worked hard, so why was there so much scolding at times during fall-in?

Basically, the band is a collection of all it members, not just one single one. Just because you put in 100% doesn't mean that every band member is a saint. As long as you believe that, there is no reason to feel wronged or anything, but a sense of responsibility to your own interests as well as the batch should push you to encourage and motivate the batch even more.

2. We could and should have played more beautiful music/made mistakes during SYF/did not put in enough effort, so why is everyone consoling each other when they were scolding each other previously?

Well, it is true that we could have been much better, but whats the point of blaming each other? Might as well stone all these people now is it? What matters now is that we get over this and start rectifying all these problems we have. Of course we recognize that things should have been better, it not as if we just ignored all that happened.

3. Before that, everyone was talking about how they wanted a GWH and all those stuff but now that we don't have it, everyone seems so okay with it, even going to the extent that they claim to be proud of it. Seems very loser rite?

Well, what are medals? Medals aim to tell us how united and able a band is. However, sometimes medals do not give the full story, as we see here. As we all know, there was poor progress and attendance at the start of SYF training period, but as time passed we learnt as a batch responsibility and diligence, as can be obviuosly seen in the week just before SYF. If we had started this way, no difficulty could hinder us. But we did not. So we understand that, and we are happy because we managed to utilize our potential (albeit a bit late). Of course G or GWH would be nice, but we all know that it isn't the medal that matters. Personally, competitions do not tell us how good a band is, but concerts which show us how well a band performs, which is the essence of a band.

Just my thoughts... to revive a deading blog :(

tmr's the day we've been looking forward to for months, ever since we've take over as top batch. dont we all want to give our best and leave behind an everlasting legacy, like zhaoyue said? we WILL okay we really will. you dont need to doubt a single second. this is our stage, our benchmark, our milestone, and our highlight of the year i daresay. no matter what comes out, even if we lose our gold streak, it's important we make music and remember, you guys are the best i can ever ask of, our bbt journeys and dinnertimes will be on my mind for a good many years to come. i thank you beforehand, i hope our band journey doesnt just end here. there's still a long way to go to making good music, i wish you all can be there with me (:

Ya that pretty much says everything. its doesn't matter, neither does it help for us to think whether stuff will be easier or harder because of the timeslot, cos ultimately what matters is how we play, not how we play in relation to the situation. The judges can't be influenced, and instead of thinking of easy way outs lets use that time to practice and focus for the competition.

hello dead blog haha i shall post something quick (before our crazy ms wk10 takes her toll on us HAHA) i think our batch has done a lot to improve dramatically from the time we took over last year (though of course as always we COULD be better XD) ya though some of us might not be good enough yet so we need to work harder! syf is very very near, the balloting and confirmation of dates will be done on 3rd march so we'll sorta know our fate then. i'm sure no1 wants to break the gold streak and be a public shame? nor would i ever dream of us being in this state.

pardon my naivity, but two years ago after our syf i was thinking when our batch was gonna take over, we're gonna to prove all our seniors' predictions wrong and bring home that gold with honour, to show them we're no pushovers. we've indeed come a long way from then, but the question remains: can we do it? only time can tell but unfortunately we dont have that luxury, so effort will make the difference. jiayou everyone.

and to all of you, pls do take care of yourselves and dont get sick/ulcers that will impede your playing. cuz know what? i have/had loads of them and it simply sucked to the core ><

last but not least, to those who dont know, exchange is on monday, first day of march hol and band camp, held at AHH from morning till afternoon i think. schools that are confirmed are NYGH RI RGS ACSI SCGS. more details to follow soon.

Hey guys me posting again!

Well we all know that the sec 1s came in on fri. 25 new members, lets hope the number gets bigger instead of smaller.

Its quite good to hear that there were quite some number of guys who put band as their first choice, but then again some guys didn't. Well I guess they just don't know how fun band and music is, so it's up for us to show them. Our goal: no one quits :)

Anyway I was just complaining about the lack of respect (if I could put it that way) the RI ppl put in music ccas like band. It seems it is reflected in the whole of Singapore too! In fact, just look at the saturday section of the straight times. The comment was to join a sports, or a cca. Seems to imply something doesn't it? Disappointing. Hmm...

Lets change that.

hi peeps.

this is just something the ever so worrisome-me has just remembered, and would like to ask the opinions of you all on what to do.

it's regarding the "basic/advanced/whatever drum courses" that are held in the band room. there was this announcement that was made on last friday to keep/secure anything that was valuable, like instruments/mutes/scores and such to prevent them from being stolen/touched/damaged by the people coming in to take the course.

one of my rather rich (ahem) friends who took the course just had his first lesson today, and i talked to him about it. a few particular lines were rather err... worrying.

"I wonder what's in those large METAL CABINETS at the side of the band room. *grins*"

Me: "when you're there, please don't touch anything except the floor, drum set and your sticks. ok?"

"ok. i promise to touch everything!"

fine. i admit those were said out of jest, but what do we do if something really goes broken/missing during this period of time? and i'm most worried about the large perc instruments aka. marimba, chimes, xylo and such, cause they're not covered/locked away, and a room full of drumstick wielding boys can't be the most careful thing in this world.

so yah. what are your views?

haha linjin you so boliao for what -.- i come post le!!! =D sorry la past few days been chionging work plus changing my blog skin (which is like super duper cool :P) and so a lil ignored this place. okay rite on to serious stuff. so here it is:

1. Something bad happened. It will be addressed by me after fall-out on monday prac. nobody, i repeat, nobody should spread it around. please keep it all to yourself.

2. First proper band prac under our batch, everyone please turn up regualarly for pracs, set good example for your juniors to follow. NOBODY is supposed to use excuses such as "I need study for CCTs","Dont feel like coming","Tell that I pon" to not come for band. All of us need study for CCTs. How do we manage our time is more important. If you dont feel like coming, I'm sorry but we dont feel like letting you play for SYF also. And if you pon, it's going to leave a black mark on your record. Pon some more and you WILL be chucked out of band, I dare say.

3. Call up any and all AP guy(s) in your respective section and spend time to talk to them, understand their problem and offer to help. I hope that everyone would be changed in one way or another to have passion for band. Only when we have passion can we be united and make music =D

4. Be prepared for screwings during concert pracs from now on. Dont be disheartend by Mr.Oura's comments/insults, they are meant to spur you on, stir up your retaliation to perform better. Taking the comments to heart will only result in misery and hatred. Please dont be a second Daniel. The Rector will preach his farewell message after which the choir will sing "Break Forth into Joy."

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be "What is Hell?" Come early and listen to our choir practice.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed, due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles, and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

The Lutheran men's group will meet at 6 pm. Steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread and dessert will be served for a nominal feel.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

Attend and you will hear an excellent speaker and heave a healthy lunch.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, superb entertainment, and gracious hostility.

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 pm - prayer and medication to follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

Thoughts on investiture

Hey guys,

I guess now is the best time to pen down what I felt about investiture, while it is still fresh in our minds.

That day was one of the very few days where we were at our best.Not in terms of playing, of course, but in terms of the way our batch did stuff. Just see the way we moved the percussion. There was no arguing, no reluctance to move the instruments (at least from what I saw), those people who would usually make trouble or stir up feelings were helping out...... It seemed as if our batch was showing the true bondage we had achieved over the years. Can we have this attitude for the rest of our time in RIMB?

From talking to some seniors or reading their blogs, you should know that most of their comments about investiture centered upon words like "unimportant" and "insignificant", but I beg to differ. In my opinion, how significant something is depends on how you want it to be. The simple action of a child playing the piano (even badly) might seem like nothing to someone who does not care yet seem like the world's proudest moment in a father's eye. No matter the circumstances, the importance of something really only depends on how important you want it to be. Investiture was one of the most important things to me. What about you?

Investiture marked the closure of the 07-08 year and the start of the 08-09 year. Let us go through the year with passion, diligence cooperation to make oursleves proud by our achievements.

On a side note, look at our batch piece, Wham, which we will be playing for REACT.

After listening to it again,, see if you were regularly looking at the conductor (me), especially during the parts where you were out the most. Since there will be a lot of people at REACT, the messiness will be multiplied unless you set a good example to everyone else. Hopefully, you guys will know to make the neccessary change. So here's to a successful first event of RIMB '09

sorry havent been updating, have been busy with all the tests and projects that are coming up. lozl i'm sure everyone is. anyway, i guess we have more or less finalised our final song for investiture: circle of life (batch piece), army of the nile and WHAM. also, the date of the investiture ceremony and performance of each batch has been confirmed: 27th august. the activites date plus the section dinner will be finalised, and i am guessing that they will be decided within each section.

well, all i can say is that we have approximately 4 pracs left before our "performance" and i want all of us to be ready and well prepared for this. we're the sec3 batch after all and we gonna take over in like 2 weeks time, our practical standard (though still not there) must be sufficiently good enough to at least play properly.

interviews are also almost done and i'm guessing the release of the results are gonna come really soon (amidst all the studying and tests). good luck to all and do take care, dont fall sick (ernest xD) and please come for all the remaining practices leading up to investiture. we need the practices. Call up all those who are not here, esp. andy =( wonder why he pon two times in a row =.= kirk say he need go mug for maths but oh well dont we all?

You should not blame the acoustics,

From what I gather, it was a theatre, not a performance hall, and the acoustics with have facilitated projection instead of resonance, which isn't a bad thing. Sure you felt like the soloist in the concerto with your inability to hear anyone else. But given the rather surprising grade given, I would say that the acoustics that day wouldn't have been very bad after all if you sat in the audience.

Pity we didn't beat RGS, or we would have a rather strong rebuttal if anyone tried to say we were not as good as them.

Still, they can't exactly say we were exactly worse than them, now can they?

We got Silver, with a score of 82%. (same as RGS) which i think is absolutely wonderful, considering how the music we played seemed to be so screwed up.

Quotes from people:

"High bronze or low silver, if we're lucky." (This was from the sec 4s)

Regarding the last quote, yes, we were lucky. If one judge had been in a bad mood due to whatever reason that day, he could have just taken a couple of marks off our score, and whoops, there goes our silver. We were treading on very thin ice that day people. And just to make sure that this doesn't happen during SYF next year, we have to

a)Practise
b)Practise more
c)Come for practise (most important one)

But, i must admit it wasn't totally our fault that we got this result. for one, our performance area was totally new to us, we didn't get the chance to rehearse beforehand. second, the theatre's acoustics weren't exactly very good. i, sitting in the back couldn't really hear the clairs in the front or the percs at the side very well. this probably meant why some people weren't playing together with the others, simply because they couldn't hear the others. third, most of us were just stressed out. and under that kind of pressure, making mistakes is understandable.

i would also like to say that all that extra practise we had a week before really paid off, so please rethink all the griping that you might have done before this. secondly, although mr. oura said we weren't aiming for gold, i think that we have the potential to do much better than what we have just achieved, and considering that we will be taking over soon, it's time to unlock that potential in preperation for next year. remember that 17 consecutive gold streak? we don't want to be infamous for being the batch that broke it.

so all in all guys, you've done really well, you've put in alot of effort, and this is what we have achieved together as a band. hope to do better/as well as this next year.

hey johnson speaking here =]. for all those who actually went to watch cadenza XI today (basically ernest brandon kirk josiah yifan and me) you'd have heard the practical standards of RGSSB (inclusive of sec4 batch this year la) and i muz admit there's this significant gap between us and them. there were really a lot of quality in them and i think i can now understand better why mr. oura always gets frustrated with us during the pracs...... i mean, if we stand in his position and look at NTU, RJCSB and RGSSB then we will realize we are lacking a lot in practical standards..... our attendace have been pretty good for this year as compared to last year (where a lot of ppl simply didnt bother and pon all the way) but prac standard will have to improve if we are to retain the Gold streak record, not to mention gettin GWH next year :D:D:D. i had also been worrying about this scary trend that SEEMS to be happening in our band: each year the seniors get a bit lousier/dont knwo how to teach properly and the sec1s taught become lousier, so as time passes by the standards drop and drop and drop.......of course, this may juz be an illusion but i'm sue everyone would agree with this concern. nonetheless, let's work hard and not let mr. oura down, he's the best we've got after all :D:D:D we need to learn to appreciate him amidst his scoldings (and insults ><). Jiayous everyone! =] (for both academic-->CCTS up next few weeks and band--> SIBF!!!!!)

eh dudes just some thoughts on the band festival thingy yesterday. if you were there and heard nanyang girls and commonwealth.. i guess you would know where we actually stand. and it issin't very high.

oh yeah... just some comments... if you happen to be playing a different part from someone else, sound different. tonewise and everything.. cuz like say when i heard the nycb saxes they all sounded the same (well can't blame the fact that they are all using the same saxophone make execpt for their solo, who didn't sound very different either). for those who went to rjc's concert its something like jeremy using a different tone to stand out from everyone else. so yeah... if you part is different, close to a solo, stand out, not with loudness, and not with some weird tone. just make it distinctive... someone correct me if im wrong

and.. TRUMPETS WORK HARDER!! hahah those bands there ytd (with the inclusion of the pri sch bands) probably could play better! hahahha no lah jk.. but at least for the sec schs and jc they honestly played better. clear articulation, nice tone, blah blah blah

long time no see for me xD. decided to write an entry regarding kirk's email. as you all know SIBF is like week 5 so we REALLY need to practise harder for our GOLD. then there is investiture and REACT around the corner, not mentioning the CIP performance for linjin's VWO. and all these obviously need PPL to attend the practices. i'm appealing to all of us once again to try to attend all practices cuz from now on till next friday the majority part of band prac will be concert, unlike wednesday and friday. hence it'll be very beneficial to our playing with all the instructions and advices that mr. oura will be giving out during concert prac. lastly, we need to decided on our last batch piece. i know patrick's trying to arrange a piece for us, as well as kirk going back to rosyth to get another score for us. all others are welcome and we'll try them out to see which one we can play and sounds nice =]. seeya all!

Hi everyone,

I was just thinking about the excellence that our band has achieved. Just think about it - RIMB has clinched 18 Golds in a row (including National Band Competition). That one Silver award is the only thing that separates us from a gold mine of nearly 30 consecutive Golds. Before that, we achieved amazing results in outdoor competitions, with so many "Best Drum Major Awards" that I bet the other schools were really frustrated... It's like a swimming pool of Gold, and one thing I do not want is for us to move toward the shallow end of the pool. Or even worse, get out of the pool.
The Singapore International Band Festival or Fiesta (or something like that, more commonly known as SIBF) is approaching. Mr. Oura informed us yesterday that the highest attainable award is Gold, with a 90% score. That's probably a Gold With Honours in SYF. Mr. Oura said that we are not aiming for Gold. I'm not sure whether he meant that we are going to aim higher or lower.
But I want to pose this challenge to you. There are three pairs of spectacles on your desk even as I'm writing this. The first one is called Pessimism. Put these on and you'll say, "Forget it. 90% is too high for us and we might as well give up from the start." The second one is called Realism. It thrives on the power of intelligence and probability, and so you start weighing the odds - "90% is so high! It's going to be hard to get... but well, RIMB is a great band and if we practice hard we can get there. Yay. Go Raffles. Come on, we can do it."
Finally, the last pair of spectacles. Faith. I believe in this statement - "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." This is found in the Bible in Hebrews 11:1. You might not see the Gold now, but put these spectacles on. Please. It will change your life forever.
Of course, we must be careful. Too much ambition without enough practice is like wearing spectacles that are too powerful for your eyes - trust me, it will give you a severe headache. But still, if your glasses happen to be Pessimism or Realism, please change over while you still have the time.

so. people going to japan have just been informed that their section needs to prepare something for the ppl in japan that we are going to meet.

so, since we're flying there, here's a list of tips i got according to a SIA flight manual. don't ask why i have one.

1. Amount of non-dutiable goods is specified on the declaration card that we got in the goodie bag. Refer to it and declare when necessary. IF unsure, just declare.

2. Japan is agriculturally active, so all foods are to be declared if they are opened or not in their original sealed packaging. That includes ba kwa and durians. It is better to check in food at the airport than to bring it in your in flight bag.

3. Durians are to be sealed up airtight when brought on board or checked in. SIA reserves the right to remove any baggage or request the disposal of any durians that are not in compliance with on board standards. (That means if you want to bring, make sure no one can smell it. If you want to bring the whole thing, make sure no one gets pricked by it. Hint: Bubble wrap.)

The usual "no explosives, firearms blah blah blah" thing applies, although i don't think anyone would be bringing them, cos getting into trouble with customs isn't very fun.

it's been a week since i last posted so >< sorry XD. anyway prometheum XII is like 6 days away and we are all worked up and excited :D. good to see we have yet added another piece to our reportoire (though it's only encore) but it's damn nice and i think ppl would like it :D. let's work harder, the efforts will pay off :D:D:D literally becuz this chionging is not only for prometheum but also for japan trip, international band festival etc. and it improves our focus and commitment. It's only probably during these intense trainings where we can actually identify the hardworking and the ponners, and hopefully the sec 4s have been taking notcie of all these through out :P. anyway jiayou! cuz everyone hopes we will have a good performance (rjcsb, rgssb and of course, RIMB!!!) we wil defy the evil prophecies layed down by the sec 4s last year, and become better when we actully step up to the challenge and face it, when we have no where to hide heehee :D cya guys later then :D (whoa long post XD)

hey ppl please visit this blog regularly XD this would be our batch blog of 09! sec 4s already have their batch blog, and i think this is a good way to really get together and foster stronger batch spirit. btw do you guys know that RGSSB batch 09 already has a blog? we cannot lose to them!!! linjin and I will be moderator of this blog so we'll be posting things regularly (or hopefully ><) thanks!
